Yann LeCun is reportedly leaving Meta to launch his own company. LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, has been with the company since 2013, when he joined Facebook as the director of AI research. More here.
Wikipedia politely asked AI companies to stop scraping its content, instead promoting their enterprise API offering. In the request, they noted that Wikipedia hosts over 880 unique datasets, 365 million product pages, and sees 2 million daily edits. More here and here.
Anthropic is projected to reach profitability well before its competitor OpenAI, reflecting contrasting growth strategies in the AI boom. By 2028, Anthropic expects to break even, while OpenAI anticipates losses of around $74 billion. More here.
Lovable, the AI coding platform, has seen a 3.5x increase in active users since July, growing from 2.3 million to nearly 8 million, according to CEO Anton Osika. The company’s ARR reached $100 million in June, around the same time it raised $200 million at a $1.8 billion valuation. More here.
Sam Udoton, the CTO of Fireflies.ai (a popular Zoom AI notetaker), shared on LinkedIn that the product didn’t work when they first started. To compensate, they would manually join Zoom meetings as “Fred from Fireflies.ai,” take notes, and send them to customers about ten minutes later. While this wasn’t exactly what they were offering, it allowed them to validate their business by “becoming the product.” More here and here.
AI developer Voltai will design, manage, and operate a $35 billion data center in South Korea. Backed by Stanford University, Voltai has partnered with investment group Stock Farm Road under the name “Project Concorde.”More here.
Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian revealed that nearly a decade ago, Sam Altman approached him seeking permission to scrape Reddit’s data for a supposed “nonprofit” project. While Ohanian admitted he was tempted, calling Altman “smart” and “cunning,” he ultimately declined, sensing that Sam “didn’t seem like the most philanthropically minded guy.” More here.
Friend, Character.AI, Replika, and Feeling Great have a new competitor in Robyn — Created by former physician Jenny Shao. The company has raised $5.5M in seed funding led by M13. More here.
SoftBank has fully exited its position in chipmaker Nvidia, selling its entire $5.83 billion stake. The move comes just a week after SoftBank and OpenAI announced a 50-50 joint venture. SoftBank previously held about 0.13% of Nvidia’s total shares, selling 32.1 million out of roughly 24.3 billion outstanding.
