Over the past few weeks, Google has overhauled NotebookLM with powerful new features. Here is a walkthrough of how the new AI research tool works, using the founding of Facebook as a demo.
1. The Setup: Deep Research
Pick a topic: For this demo, I chose the founding of Facebook.
Upload sources: I used the new Deep Research tool. Instead of just pasting links, this agent actively finds high-quality sources across the web for you.
Curate: Select the specific sources you want the Notebook to ground its answers in.
2. Chat with Your Knowledge Base Once your sources are live, you can query documents directly.
My Prompt: “What were the 2 major lawsuits that came from Facebook’s early days?”
3. Create Content with NotebookLM’s “Studio” section with 8 creation tools. Here is how I used the top 3:
Audio Overview: This creates a conversational AI podcast about your sources.
Prompt: “Focus on the early funding from Saverin and Thiel.”
Slide Decks (powered by Nano Banana Pro): The AI can now generate visual presentations. I switched to a notebook on Ramp’s business model for this.
Prompt: “Create a pitch deck for Ramp. Include slides for Problem, Solution, Product, Team, Business Model, and Pricing.”
Video Overview (powered by Veo 3.1): You can now generate custom video histories.
Prompt: “Tell me about the history of the Facebook-to-Meta logo evolution.”
4. Other Studio Features Beyond the big three, the Studio now includes:
Mind Maps
Reports
Flashcards & Quizzes
Infographics
